OPTIMIZE ARC STABILIZATION FOR GOLD MEDAL WINNING WELDS!
The race to achieve maximum productivity with consistent, quality welds is not easily won. Getting off to a great start by monitoring your arc stabilization period is critical for optimizing your welding performance.

What is the Arc Stabilization Period (ASP)?
The Arc Stabilization Period (ASP) is the time (in seconds) it takes for the welding arc to stabilize after it first strikes the base metal. The optimal ASP time varies based on application, but typically a desirable arc stabilization period for GMAW is under one second. ASP times over one second could signal a problem that may result in poor weld quality or arc failure.

The Weld Central® Optimization System is the only DAQ system that monitors and tracks the Arc Stabilization Period, and it also allows alerts to be triggered when the ASP falls out of user defined parameters.

Why is it important to track the ASP?
When the ASP is beyond the optimal time, this can be a sign there are problems in the system causing the arc to get off to a bad start. Some common culprits that lead to poor ASP are excess spatter build-up on the consumables, improper gas flow and wire delivery problems causing an erratic wire feed. Longer ASP times usually mean more wear and tear on torch consumables, reducing contact tip life. An ideal ASP should be fast with the arc stabilizing quickly.


The Weld Central® is the only optimization system that tracks and monitors ASP.

The graphs above from the Wizard View® software interface show a comparison between a poor ASP (2.44 sec) and a good ASP (0.25 sec), along with the resulting welds. After analyzing data retrieved from Weld Central®, one manufacturer used Blue Chill® anti-spatter to reduce spatter build-up and optimized their wire delivery system with Wire Guide Modules and low-friction conduit. Their ASP improved substantially and decreased 81% from a peak time of 3.03 seconds to just 0.59 seconds, resulting in improved welding quality and performance.
