Arc stability is a key performance indicator in GMAW welding, and it is linked to other factors that affect overall welding performance such as spatter, consumable life and weld quality. Recently, PowerBall® consumables went head-to-head with two other brands of replacement consumables at a tier 1 automotive production facility. The manufacturer conducted the testing as part of their continuous improvement process to ensure the welding products they are utilizing provided optimum performance in their robotic MIG welding cells.

A Weld Central® Optimization & DAQ System was installed for collection of accurate welding performance data. Throughout the 4,000 weld test, PowerBall® consumables showed significantly more arc stability than the other consumables tested. Below are comparisons of the amperage and voltage data collected on PowerBall® consumables and another set of consumables tested:

As shown in the graph, the spikes in the amperage and voltage are absent from the welds completed with the PowerBall® consumables, providing a more stable arc for consistent welding performance. At the end of the test, they showed a 24% increase in amperage stability and an 18% increase in voltage stability. Additionally, arc starts were faster and smoother, with 73% more arc starts below 0.5 seconds (optimal arc start time)!

With consistent arc stability and faster arc starts, productivity and overall weld quality can be improved with less spatter, less weld defects, reduced part rework and an extended consumable life.
